HISTORY OF THE PEMBROKE WELSH CORGI

Originating in Pembrokeshire, Wales, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a charming dog that people say comes from a fairytale. The fairytale goes one day some children were tending to their family’s farm when they think they saw two foxes rounding up the cattle. However, when they got closer they saw they were puppies and took them home. The parents then told their children they were a gift from the fairies and that the fairies would use them to pull their carriages or ride into battle. To prove this to their children, they pointed out each puppies marking where it looked like a saddle. The children then idolized their puppies and from then on the Pembroke Welsh Corgi were known for taking care of the family’s cattle (Pembroke Welsh Corgi Dog Breed Information, Pictures, Characteristics & Facts).

For those who do not believe in fairytales, historians say the Pembroke Welsh Corgi were cattle dogs that came from Sweden and were brought over to Wales by the Vikings.

Either way, this breed is amazing. Farmers who kept working dogs in the past bred the best kind of working dogs they could. Still to this day many farmers have Pembroke Welsh Corgis as working dogs and prefer them over other breeds.

Back in 1920, the Kennel Club saw this breed as purebred and they were known as the Welsh Corgi. During this time the Pembroke and Cardigan were considered the same breed but in 1934 they sought them to be separate breeds.

Both the Pembroke and Cardigan have the same heads, bodies, and the ability to herd. The Pembroke Corgi is on the smaller side and does not have a tail. While the Cardigan is more on the bigger side and has a tail.

Corgis are the smallest herding dogs come to know. They look similar to a fox as far as size, head, and nose shape. Corgis come in many coats such as red, sable, fawn, or tri-colored, with white markings.

Did You Know Corgis…

Corgis are extremely vocal dogs and will bark at anything and everything.

Corgis are extremely intelligent but can be extremely stubborn.

Corgis’ strong instinct to heard might cause them to nip at your feet if running or as simple as walking.

Even though corgis are a small breed they are a load of energy.

Queen Elizabeth herself owns corgis!
